Timbuk2 is normally out of my price range, but at over 50% off it is a deal. I probably would have paid the same for a no-name backpack of dubious quality at a box store. The only way to get a better deal is to get super lucky at a thrift shop. I love the brown/orange combination (matches the photo). I looked at various Timbuk2 bags at REI. This model is definitely not as fancy as their more expensive bags and says “budget”, but it has the features I was looking for and I actually prefer the simple compartment styling. I would call the size between medium and large. Holds a lot but not huge like something you would want to bring camping or backpacking. I really like the cinch straps at the bottom – they seem like they will come in handy. I like the stiff foam back and how the shoulder straps fit. My 1 liter Sigg water bottle fits great in the side pocket.

I am dinging it one star because I think a bag this expensive (at full price it is not much less than the fancier phoenix bag) should offer some sort of waterproof feature, or at least water resistance. I am also not sure how well the brown tweed fabric will wear with heavy use. It feels like something I will need to keep away from my cats for fear of excessive snagging. The tweed fabric does have a coating on the inside, so maybe that will be enough for long term wear. The orange canvas and black nylon feels very sturdy.

It meets my expectations and I think it is a good deal when bought on sale. I would not pay full price for it. If you want a Timbuk2 bag, check at REI for any bags on clearance first, before ordering online.

Unimpressed, planning to return, June 9, 2014

Bought this on sale for $40 figuring it would be a great deal for a day hiking and bike commuting bag. Timbuk2 generally has a good reputation for quality bags, so I figured at half-price this was a great deal. I’ve used it on one hike and could never get a comfortable fit even just hauling a water bottle, jacket, and a few loose items as the straps were either too loose letting bag bounce or too tight pinching shoulders. Just a bad fitting bag despite many attempts to adjust. I used it on a bike commute and with any medium-hard efforts to sprint or hill climb it starts bouncing around. The material is mid-grade with light weight zippers, I do not expect it will hold up to much use. The back pad is flat with no ventilation so plan for a sweaty back. The small pocket doesn’t open wide enough to easily reach items on the bottom.

Overall I’d say this is equivalent to most $30-40 department store high school backpacks. Dont expect much.
