My Great-Grandfather’s Advice, October 25, 2012

When I was a boy, my Great-Grandfather told me that everyone makes mistakes. He said that one of the things that separates those with character from the rest was what they did when they recognized their mistakes. The best people and companies focus on doing things right the first time and correcting the occassional, inevitable mistakes promptly. The worst are sloppy, ignore their mistakes and fail to correct them.

Evidence suggests that my Great-Grandfather would approve of Hirt’s Gardens. Our first Mulberry order was puny, sickly and on death’s door when it arrived. Frankly, it was a mistake that never should have been shipped. When we contacted Hirt’s with our complaint and pictures of the plant, they promptly acknowledged their mistake and refunded our money. However, we still wanted a Mulberry plant so we ordered again. The second time, Hirt’s got it right. They promptly sent us a healthy and robust looking plant that was over 9″ tall upon arrival. We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to grow this plant to maturity and will eventually be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Had Hirt’s gotten it right the first time and/or enclosed value-added instructions about how to care for and grow the Mulberry (as requested) and, perhaps, basic information about the plant (like how much sun they need, how long it will take before the plant grows fruit, etc.) we’d have rated this as a five star product performance. Unfortunately, Hirt’s didn’t do either, so 4 Stars is the best we could honestly do. (After all, they’re in the expert gardening business, we’re not.)

8/6/13: We’ve added a star because: (1) The 2nd tree has really thrived. (2) We think that the comments on our initial review contain pearls of wisdom. (3) The customer service we received would have pleased my Great Grandfather. (4) Hirt’s has beefed up their product description with helpful information. Hopefully they will add further information as this product gains more traction in the marketplace.

Bought two a couple of months ago–one for the front yard and one for the back. They were small when I put them in the ground (February–central Fl) but they’re already a couple of feet tall and are growing like weeds. I hope they turn into (dwarf) monsters!

Received a healthy plant in the Fall 2012. Instead of planting it outside, I decided to grow in pot for now. Growing beautifully! Will plant next Spring. Was very surprised to find one for my area, zone 3/4
